About
A small biography of A K Mohanty.
Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty (born 11 October 1959 in Odisha, with roots in Mayurbhanj district) is an Indian nuclear physicist. He is the first Odia to serve as Union Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).
He has worked for decades in nuclear physics, covering collision energies from the sub-Coulomb barrier to the relativistic regime.
His research
-used the Pelletron accelerator at the TIFR
-involved the PHENIX experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory
-the CMS experiment at CERN, Geneva.
As of recent records he has a very high citation impact (h-index reported around 227 with over 243,000 citations in one source).
The Department of Atomic Energy (under the direct charge of the Prime Minister) develops nuclear power technology and applies radiation technologies in agriculture, medicine, industry, and basic research. The Atomic Energy Commission administers the Atomic Energy Act, 1962, and oversees related policy, nuclear power projects, and peaceful applications of nuclear energy.
Undergraduate (Honours in Physics): 1979, MPC College, Baripada.
Postgraduate: 1981, Ravenshaw College, Cuttack.
Joined the Nuclear Physics Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in 1983 after graduating from the BARC Training School (26th batch).
Doctorate: Mumbai University (University of Mumbai).
